A Message From Kelly Hunter:
Dear Fellow Professional Developers,

As the new year approaches, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the wonderful work you are doing and the impact it is having on the hundreds of teachers and thousands of students we are working with this year.

Voltaire wrote, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing.  It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”  Appreciation for your work can be heard, seen and felt across CLI classrooms.  We hear it when a Philadelphia first grade student asks, “Mayor Nutter, what is your favorite genre?”  We see it as students’ eyes light up at the site of a new box of books in a Newark school.  We feel it when a classroom erupts into cheers at the site of a CLI person entering the room in a Chicago pre-K class.

Your expertise does become a part of our teachers’ and students’ knowledge and language. You not only impact the teachers and students you serve but you impact all of us here at CLI. I appreciate the daily opportunities to learn from all of you and to hear the inspirational stories that our teachers and students share about their time with their CLI PD.

We have a lot to celebrate at this time of year as I believe the gift of education is truly the best one we could possibly give. It is a gift that cannot be taken away unlike other things that might be disappearing in this economic crisis.

As we are all experiencing the impact of the recession, CLI is being proactive to remain a top professional development provider and “the best national primary educational investment” per The Center for High Impact Philanthropy at the University of Pennsylvania.

Although CLI continues to raise additional funds and expand our work, we are seeking to reduce our expenditures in anticipation for potential cutbacks from funders.  One cutback that CLI has made is to reduce food expenses.  CLI will not be providing food for any staff member or consultant during DPD (Developing the Professional Developer) January 7th & 8th.  Please make arrangements to bring your own food or speak with your Regional Manager or Coordinator to see if the group will be contributing to a lunch order. We are making similar cutbacks all across CLI.  In the coming weeks, we will also be soliciting your input for further improvements and cutbacks that we can make.

I’m reminded of something that John F. Kennedy said, “The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis'. One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger-but recognize the opportunity.”

President Kennedy’s words ring just as true today as when he first spoke them. Every crisis presents an opportunity. If it is recognized and seized, even the most destructive events can be transformed into springboards to future success.

I’m confident that, with your help, CLI will continue to grow and provide the excellent literacy education that our teachers and students need and deserve.

May Kennedy’s words help you to see the opportunities that are before all of us.

Wishing you all the best for a happy and healthy new year,

Kelly
